4 Steps to Get a Marketing Job

Marketing jobs are an essential part of any business. It is particularly important for a business to progress, and there are various reasons as to how marketing plays a part in this once an effective strategy has been sought.  Marketing requires a high level of research, planning and consistency to ensure that the business has a great outreach. There are four P’s of marketing product, price, place, and promotion and there are roles throughout various areas of the marketing process. Marketing jobs are a hugely in-demand sector with plenty of career choices which makes it a great choice if you are just starting out in your career or you wish to change career direction.

1. Gain Experience

A valuable step in getting a marketing job is being able to bring some experience with you into the role. Mentioning your experiences to an interviewer will place you high up in the competition when it comes to marketing jobs as it will allow you to fit into the role quicker (something employers look for). You could gain experience by creating some marketing content of your own. You could create a portfolio of your marketing ideas and be ready to present them at an interview. You could also make a blog and experiment on there.

Other experience could come from a marketing internship this would be some of the best experience you could get before landing your dream marketing job, however it is possible to find a job without having done an internship.

2. Marketing Courses

There are various courses for marketing including marketing degrees, online courses and other training. If you wish to obtain a marketing degree, you could study for a CMI marketing qualification.

If you are looking for a course that allows for flexibility, perhaps a course that runs after work hours, the College of Contract Management provides online courses in Marketing, including an HND in Marketing. This Higher National Diploma in Business Marketing is awarded by Pearson. The College of Contract Management also offers a Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing and SEO if you are thinking of going into the marketing of websites.

Whichever route you choose, there are a lot of options should you choose to increase your skills with a qualification.

3. Expand Your Network

Expanding your network is a great way to find a marketing job, making connections with employers and businesses will help you progress with your career. Expanding your network increases your credibility as well as you position, it could be the deciding factor to whether an employer chooses you over another hopeful interviewee. It would be particularly useful to connect with the marketing industry, and potentially the businesses you are most interested in. Linkedin is a great website to do this, they focus on building connections throughout the working world and it allows companies to search for their new employees based on job profiles.

If you choose to take a course in marketing, another way to network would be to make meaningful conversations with your lecturers and course leaders as they often have connections themselves that they could pass on. Follow Home Cares for home improvement tips.

Finally, always be willing to start a conversation with those in the industry you wish to progress in. Your interest in the industry will ensure that you are connected with the right people.

4. Research Your Chosen Area

A great way to show to your interviewer that you are serious about the industry and the marketing job is to ensure that you have done your research. In your cover letter, demonstrate how you have researched the role and, if asked for an interview discuss what you like about the company, the industry and the job role. You could also research what the company’s values and goals are and make sure they align with your own values. Browsing the businesses website as well as their social media is a great place to start when it comes to research.
